Things to Remember about Diamond Blades

Concrete can be cut with any number of tools. Generally, there is an abrasive product to fit any tool you already own to cut concrete. Silicon carbide abrasive or diamond rimmed saw blades are used to cut concrete.

How Diamond Saws Cut:

Blade performance is a combination of the material being cut, cutting speed and blade life. Changing one variable affects the others. Aggregate hardness and size, amount of steel reinforcing (rebar) and whether the concrete is green or cured affects blade selection. The segments of the diamond blades are made up of a mixture of diamonds and metal powders. The composition of the bond that holds the diamonds must be matched to the hardness or softness of the material being cut. The simple rule of thumb to remember when selecting a blade: Use something hard to cut something soft and something soft to cut something hard.

Choose the Proper Blades:

Though silver brazed diamond blades were used widely in wet concrete cutting before, now laser welded ones are more common for their firm laser weld and high performance.

You should check what diameters of blades your concrete saw can accommodate, and the saw’s arbor size which the arbor hole on the diamond blade should match. Also, you should examine the horsepower of the concrete saw. The saw’s horsepower affects the diamond blade selecting. These types of blades used on big horsepower saws should have harder bond or higher diamond concentration, otherwise the blade may be consumed very quickly.

Tips for Concrete Cutting:

Concrete can also be cut with abrasive blades, but diamond ones are recommended, as they can provide at least two times faster cutting, less downtime, and constant depth of cuts.

If you use a diamond blade occasionally and your jobs are small, you can choose the economical grade blades to save your expense (but the cutting speed of such blades should be fast enough). If you use them frequently or the job is big, you should choose high grade professional blades. This can help you decrease your cost per cut.

If you are not sure that you can do the cutting job well, you can just hire a professional concrete cutting company to do the job for you.

  1. This article was so helpful on why diamond blades are a great way to cut concrete. I don't know much about construction still so this was very informative on how to get what tools I need for my home projects. Hopefully I can use this information to get the right tools for me. http://www.crozierdiamondtools.com/product-category/demolition-saws/

  2. Very Informational Post!It is very important to setup and use your new blade correctly to ensure the longest possible life.I really want to know this kind of information, Because If we well-informed about the purpose and correct usage of the diamond blade then we can select right kind of concrete diamond blades both from cost and safety point of view. Thanks
